Film Title: Sinister

Brief Plot and Outline-

The film opens with Super 8 footage depicting a family of four standing beneath a tree with hoods over their heads and nooses around their necks. An unseen figure saws through a branch acting as a counterweight, causing their deaths by hanging. mothes later a faily move into the house. the father of the family is a struggling crime writier and he moves his wife and kids into the house where a family once died. throughout the film the father is seen in the cellar watching old films of familys being murdered that he found in his new house. his family are oblivious to the past of the house. as the movie goes on the family see weird dpirits in thoe house and there youngest daughter is especally affected by the presence living ith them. as the caos hits and the wife of the writier finds out the truth of why he was so desperate tomove to this particular house they are driven out to live with parents and the end of the film shows the faimly being murdered by there daughter and being filmed.

which sence impressed me and why?-

i really liked the scene that showed all of the scary children, it starts with the ather creeping rounf the house with a bat, the lighting is very dark and it is almost hard to see him in thelow key lighting. the first shot shows him in a medium long shot and then as he hears a noise cuts to a close up reaction shot of his face. this shows the fear that he is feeling as he is sweating and his eyes are wide open. as the camera pans across a small child with a demented face jumps out and this creates a jump scare. along with the sharp music that is added this sends a shocking fear through your body. as the small child then runs off the footage is slowed down to slow motion and this makes the scene very creepy.the high pitched music that runs along this scene builds suspence and tells you that something else is goin to happen. as he walks into thr darkness from the light he is standing in he is almost walking towards 'fear' from the safety of the glimpse of light he is standing into the unknown and unpredictable darkness.

How has watching this film helped you understand this genre of filmmaking? Which features on the genre checklist did you spot in the film? When? How?

watching this film has helped me understand the genre of film making because it shows how the film is shaped round a nuclear family, this is there there is a mum a dad and 2 children there is also a dog. this is done in almost every horror film and is essentual to the genre. this film has lots of low key lighting and creepy enclosed locations. the use of slow montage during the super 8 style scenes make the horror drag out making the act much more real. hand held camera is also used during these shots which adds to the realism. the psycho serial killer isnt revieled until the very end but he is there the whole way through. this film has an unhappy ending not open to another film.

Draft Different colour schemes for final product: magazine

These are the first drafts of my horror magazine cover that I made. I created three different colour schemes that I could use for my final product I really like the way that these have turned out but I think that they don't look 'horror' enough even though I wanted to go for the more 'glamorous' approach. I called my magazine 'DIVA', because it's definition is a 'successful women'; I thought this was a clever technique in implying the target audience and drawing women in to the cover before even picking it up. Personally, I believe it's a catchy title (and memorable too) which is very important in assisting distribution.

The issue that I did for my magazine is called the glamorous horror issue; this meant that I wanted the magazine to look more 'girly'. Due to the target audience of our magazine being for females I believe this would therefore bring in a greater profit. I think that the pink background looks really good but possibly a little bit too child like. The header of my magazine is 'diva' the font that I used for this is an old Hollywood style I like this because it connotes old fashioned film. On my magazine cover I also have a bubble with speech in it, I like this because it makes your eye catch the text. I think that the contrast between the cream and the black on this bubble means that the writing is very easy to read. The image of one of my actors from my film is covering some of the header for my magazine but because it would be an iconic logo, this shows that it is an established brand which already has its own audience.

I think that something that could be improved on my magazine cover is that it needs to be a bit more horror like. I also think that I want to change the background colour of the magazine to something more simple, I think that this would make my magazine look less feminine and more 'classy horror'.

The Conjuring Film Review

Film Title: The Conjuring

Genre/Genres: psycological horror

Director: James Wan

Brief Plot and Outline-

The Conjuring is a 2013 American supernatural horror film directed by James Wan. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson star as Ed and Lorraine Warren, who were American paranormal investigators and authors associated with prominent cases of haunting. Their reports inspired the Amityville Horror.The Warrens come to the assistance of the Perron family (Ron Livingston and Lili Taylor), who are experiencing increasingly disturbing events in their farmhouse in Harrisville, Burrillville, Rhode Island in 1971. the family later find out that the house was previously owned by n accused witch who had tried to sacrafise her week old child to the devil and later killed her self after putting a course on 'who ever would take her land'. the faimly want to perfom an exoercicim on the house and have to gather evidience to show the catholic church to do this. carolyn is then possed by the spirit and tries to kill her daughters but is restrained and the exorcism is the performed on er daving her self and children. the catholic then approve the rights to exorsise the house and investite the area.

which two sence impressed me and why?-

the first of my favourite two scenes is where daughter annabelle is woken during the night by a storm out side and gets out of her bed to find her dad, as she walks down the stairs calling for her father the camera follws her, i like the way this is shot because it feels like a point of view angle and like someone is watchig her and following her down the stairs. as the scene procedes i like the way the lighting flashes when the lightning hits and lights the room up so that everything can be seen for a sudden moment and then goes back the the darknesss f night leaving a lot to the imagination of what could happen. the camera angles throughout the whole scene are canted angles and to a point hand held camera, where ever annabelle moves so shoes the shot giving the illiosion there is something following her. as she retaracts from the stairs the lighting gets even darker showing a presence and the darkness cannoting death. the music during this part of the scene builds tention as the audience know something bad is going to happen. once annabelle has caught a glimpse of the spirit in the cellar the misic changes completley, the high pitches and fast paced music creates drama and strikes fear as the daughter tries to get away. once the chair has hit the watt the music stops and gives you a second to catch your breath.

the sec ond scene i really liked was the scene when one of the daughters hears noises coming from their wardoribe during the night, as she gets up to look inside the wardrobe her sister sits up in bed and sees a spirit sitting on top of the wardrobe as her sister opens it. i like the camera angle of the shot that shows the spirit, she is at a high point in the shot and shows that she has power over the two girls as she jumps down to grab the older daughter. the lighting in this scene again is ver low key and dark i like this because it is a very simple way to make the scene moch more creepy and suspenceful.

How has watching this film helped you understand this genre of filmmaking? Which features on the genre checklist did you spot in the film? When? How?

this helped me understand the genre of film making because it used many of the features that are on our horror genre checklist the first that i noticed was the use of a creepy enclosed location, which was obviously the house they were living in, it was old fashioned and cluttered with creaky floorboards and big wooden doors. in the house the lighting was also always low key this represents that the house is 'doomed' and connotes danger and death. other miss en scene includes the use of music to create tention and other feelings such as feer throughout the entire film.
the editing throughout this film included lots of canted angles espessially when building tension, i think that this is done specifically to lone characters when they are about to be attacked by the spirit, an example for this is buring the build up for annabelle to be attacked in the cellar.
the male hero is represented in this film by the dad he is the saviour in many sences including the one mentioned above when he saves annabelle.

Which aspects of the film would you like to include in your own trailer? Why?

the aspets of this film that i will try and use in my trailer is the low key lighting because i think that that is a really easy and effective way to convey fear to the audience. i also liked the creepy isolated location that they used which i hope that we can find somewhere similar that gives the same effect on our low budget!

for part of my planning we looked at two different trailer types, here i looked at a highlight trailer. this type of trailer takes the best parts of the film and puts them all together in one trailer. i like this type of trialer because i think that they are the most interesting and the most trilling as they have all of the goof bits.

the other type of trailer that we could have chosento use is the scene trailer, this is where one scene from the film is shown i dot really like this style of trailer because you dont really get the full idea of what the film is about although it does man that there are still good bits in the film that wont have been seen yet.

Analysis of a horror character - Leatherface

Leatherface is the main antagonist in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre films and was inspired by real life murderer Ed Gein. His name is Leatherface due to the fact he wears a mask of skin which has been sewn together using the skin of his many victims. The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1973) was released

with various problems over censorship (it was banned in Britain until 1999) but it still made over 30 million at the box office.

Leatherface's main role in the film involves the torture and killing of his many victims, he waits in his basement until the time is right and lunges from his hiding place to attack his prey where he drags them back to suffer is obsession.

Throughout the film Leatherface is seen is many shots more are ‘frantic’ and he is presented as a particularly rash and scatty individual in the way he attacks the friends that explore his home. The lighting Leatherface is seen under is frequently very low key connoting that he is dangerous. None of the shots in this film show Leatherface having much power, which is unusual for the killer in most horror films. Other characters in the film such as Drayton Swayer, display much more power particularly mentally and is very creepy and deceiving.   

The miss-en-scene in this film shows Leatherface in a suit and shirt I think this connotes the he liked to present himself in a classic way and ironically took care in his appearance. I think that this is also shown in the fact that he wore the Leatherface, this is because he cared so much about his appearance that he felt the need to make an entire new face and kill many people in the process. It also shows him challenging the mainstream "good looking people" by wearing the same posh clothes as them but by killing them off.

The lighting throughout this film is very low key connoting that something bad will happen especially in the house where Leatherface lives it is very dark and this tells you that something bad will happen. The props used in this film such as the jars of body parts kept by Leatherface show that he was very crazy and that he liked to keep certain parts of his victims. Another prop used on one scene was the room of chickens with all the feathers I think this showed a cluttered house with lots of hording again connoting that Leatherface liked to ‘keep’ lots of things.

Overall I think that this character is one of the many inspired by infamous killer Ed Gein and in my opinion the best. I like the way that this character was portrayed and also the style of the film all round.

History of Horror: An Overview

Horror is a film genre seeking to elicit a negative emotional reaction from viewers by playing on the audience's primal fears. Horror films often feature scenes that startle the viewer; the macabre and the supernatural are frequent themes. Thus they may overlap with the fantasy, supernatural, and thriller genres.

Horror films often deal with the viewer's nightmares, hidden fears, revulsion and terror of the unknown. Plots within the horror genre often involve the intrusion of an evil force, event, or personage, commonly of supernatural origin, into the everyday world.











Prevalent elements include ghosts, aliens, vampires, werewolves, demons, gore, torture, vicious animals, evil witches, monsters, zombies,cannibals, and serial killers. Conversely, movies about the supernatural are not necessarily always horrific.



 















Early horror films such as Nosferatu (1922) revolutionized the 20's horror genre through Max Scheck's sinister vampire like villain, which include rat-like make-up. The same happened with Frankenstein in the 30's with the eventual ban of the film due to it being inappropriate (such as the scene when the little girl is drowned by the monster) and far too violent for the audience of this time. These days the restrictions of how much gore and violence can be shown in a film are much more relaxed and directors can get away with much more.

these are the pictures that we took during out time in the studio, we took these pictures for our magazine and our posters and i think that they came out really well we used a variety of props such as a bunch of flowers, a noose and a white vale. we also prepared for the shoot by dressing out protagonist for our trailer in a white gown to signify her purity in her previous life and then added a black wig to connote death. i think that the photos that we took are really good and will look great on both magazine covers and posters. i also like the fact that they are done on a white background, i think that this looks really good because it contrasts with the white that our model is wearing. i think that the images that we have are a good mixture of some glamours shot which could be used on magazine covers to pull buyers in and some more slightly 'true to the film' images that will be great for the poster. so all round i think that these are very successful shots.

The Demented (ENSFC Horror Trailer) Rough Cut

 

This is the rough cut for our trailer for the film The Demented, i really like the way that our tralier has thurned i think it has mystery and also suspence, my favourite shit is at the start of the trailer, about the 3rd shot when the demented girl reaches for the light in the crack in the window, because of the back light it looks very creepy and you can only really see the sillowet of the demented girl and the light shining onto her into the dark room. i think that one main thing that we really need to work on now is to correct the filters that we have put onto some of the shots. we were trying to make it slightly darker but we have finished with all the shots being differet and this looks like the conternewerty does not match. i think that another thing that we could have done differently on our tralier is whilst filming shots not 'zoomed in' on so many shots because i think that this looked a little unprofessional.



The Demented Shot List

 

this is the first part of our shot list for our film trailer The Demented, we think that we stuck to the shot list pretty well and did all of the shoots that we needed to as well as some additional ones that we decided to do on the day that we added to the trailer that really added to the different techniques that we wanted to have in it. i think that the shot list is a vital part of filming a trailer and without it i don't think that we could have been as organised with our filming as we were. adding how long we wanted each shot to be was really hard because we had never made a horror trailer before and didn't know what was the 'norm' for a shot. I think that we could have made a few of our shout shorter so during the editing process we had to cut the best parts out of each shot and make them shorter to make the editing much more choppy and fast paced i think that this adds to the 'scaryness' of the trailer.

The Demented Poster Final Draft

this is my final piece for my poster i really like the finished look of the product, i changed it by adding a tag line under the header saying 'body of a girl soul of a psycopath' i really like this feature because it gives a little insight into what the movie might be about i also really like the font and colour i have writen the tag line in. The font makes it look like it has been scratched in and i think that this goes alongwith the theme of death. i like the colour because it makes the dress of the woman i the image. i also changed he header of the poster a lot, it originally hate effects 'pattern overlay' but i took of this effect an replaced it with 'stroke' and 'outer glow' which i think look a lot more professional a subtle.

The Demented Poster First Draft

This is the first draft of my poster for my film, i still think that there is room to improve but i really like the image that i have used on it i think that it is very creepy and the effects that i have use on it make the one red eye stand out, i used the paint brush tool to o this by zooming in very fast an decreasing the transparency and coloured in the coloured eye area which was previously blue, i think that the original blue eye didn't looks scary enough so this is a really good element to the poster cover. i used various filters over the whole poster because i feel like this darkened it in general and then i used the contrast tool to make different parts of it to stand out, for instance the white night dress looks bright and almost glowing which connotes purity. this contrasts the deadly black hair on the wig which is very messy which could mean she was once pure but as since been trough hell.

Horror Magazine Cover Analysis 3 - TOTAL FILM

this is a magazine cover for TOTAL FILM magazine the picture on the front of this is very sexualised this is done to attract the male audience, therefore this magazine is targeted towards young males. i really like the layout of this magazine i think that it is very well spread out and the colours really go well together, i think that the white back ground looks very clean and professional the pictures along the top of this magazine show snippets of with is iside the magazine and i think that this makes me want to buy the magazine because i see a little insite and then i want to read on. the way the have got 'out biggest preview ever!' written on this magazine is a marketing technique, if the consumer think that it will be the 'best' of something or they will be getting 'extra' for their money then they will be more open to buying the magazine. i think one down side to this is that the creators could have doe more to make this piece of information stand out against the rest of the cover lines. to me any person just scanning the shelves would just skip past it where as if it was in a box in a colour that didn't fit the colour scheme them it would catch the buyers eye and possible pull them in more.

i think that other weaknesses of this magazine cover are that some of the cover lines are a little small therefore a bit hard to read although i do think that this is a minor problem and overall i really like this magazine and i would buy it if i was looking to get a film magazine.

Horror Magazine Cover Analysis 2 - ENTERTAINMENT

this is one of my favourite magazine covers i like it because it looks simple but all the information you need is there on their. the header is covered by the image but this doesn't matter because the entertainment logo is well known and iconic so is recognised even when it isn't fully visible. the image on the front of this cover isn't a still from the movie instead a glamorous photo shoot to pull people into buying the magazine because the women on the front of this cover are pretty and wearing nice, expensive clothes. i think that this magazine cover is directed towards middle aged men and women, the men want these women and the women want to look like these women.

I think that the negatives of this magazine cover is that the cover lines are in a bit of an awkward place, i feel like the ;layout doesn't really look right and possibly a little bit messy, i think that this could have been approved by putting them to the sides.

Horror Magazine Cover Analysis 1 - EMPIRE

i like this magazine cover because the header is very clear, and the iconic font and layout of this magazine all cotribute to making a very professional looking magazine cover. i also like the fact that the magazine cover isnt very over crowded and everthing on the cover is easy to read. the over line 'twilight: new moon' combined with the picture of a character of someone from that film shows that the main focus to this issue is the release of that film. the cover also has other small images on it to show other things that are inside the magazine, they show you a sneak peak to draw you into buying the magazine/

i think that the negatives of this magazine are that it doesnt have much of an insite into the magazine, their are a few pictures and cover lines but not enough that it would pull me in and want me to buy this magazne.

solo horror trailer review- nightmare on elm street

In this trailer you see a woman who has a child, he has a terrifying birth and terrifying death and then Freddie decides he needs a child and all hell breaks lose.

 

I think that one positive of this is that i like the cheesy voice that goes over the top of the trailer i think that if this was not there then i wouldn't really understand what is going on in the trailer as it is very low level lighting and not very much dialogue .

 

i think that the negative of this tralier is that i dont really understand the story line even with the voice over explainig, i havent seen the film but i have watched the trailer and i wouldt go and see this film because nothing really drew me into wanting to see it. the story line didnt look very interesting either.

 

over all i dont think i would bother going to see this film on the basis of seeing the trailer.

Solo horror trailer review- 7500 (2012)

My rating: 4

 

 

in this trailer you see a flight boarding from la to tokyo in japan, the plane is taking off and once in the air it seems they are about to hit some rough air, it is suggested that it is something more than the weather conditions torrorising the air craft

 

i think that one of the posatives of the trailer is that the music fits very well with the trailer, i like the fact that it builds lots of tension, as the trailer goes on the music breaks up and i think this really adds an element of far to it. Another thing that i like about the trailer is that the pace is good, it goes with the usual horror trailer conventions and is much slower at the start then goes faster paced towards the end to make it more scary.

 

i think that one of the nagatives of the trailer is that it doesnt really explain the story at all. i still really know nothing about what the movie is about exept the fact that they are on a plaine and they hit some rough air.. possibly something a bit more super natural. the tralier isnt very convincing and doesnt make me want to watch the movie.

 

all round i was very disapointed with the trailer and i wouldnt watch the film.

Solo trailer review- Carrie (2013)

My rating: 8

 

in this trailer you see the story of a young girl who becomes aware of her power, contsantly picked on at school and daughter to a crazy mother. The troubled teen is randomly asked to prom with the most popular guy in school and just as she is presented with the prom queen title a crewl prank is played on her and Carrie spirls into a furey using her power to ceate devistation.

 

i thought tahat this was a good horror trailer because the showed a good amount of the film, it also leaves you wanting to see more because it does not tell you everything that happens. i also liked the stle hat the film was shot in i think that the colour nd the old fashioned filters really worked, especially as it is a remake of a film from the 70's.

 

i think that one of the negative points of the trailer is quite slow paced the whole way through, i think that if the pace had increased a bit more towards the end of the trailer then it ould have created a bit more suspence and fear.

 

over all i really ejoyed this trailer and thought that it really made me want to go and watch the whole film.

 

 

The Demented draft poster, initial plot and class feed back

Steriotypical fan

As a group we have discussed who our stereotypical fan for our horror movie would be. We are aiming to target a stereotypical female with in the age range of 18-30 years of age. By discussing the demographics and psychographics off our target audience we are able to make a better trailer which will aim to please the stereotypical fan we have created.

The character we have created is a female between the ages of eighteen and thirteen. Our female fan is called Roxy; she has long brown hair is quite masculine. Roxy is classed as working class, working as a police woman wanting to change the world for better. In her free time she watches horror films with her cats in her flat. She plays guitar in her band called ‘Rocking Headstones’, her and her band mates play in small pubs around her town. Roxy has a large tattoo of a rose on her upper arm, which adds to her masculine side. Roxy has her nose and tongue pierced with a variety of piercings on both her ears. She comes across rather rebellious in a feminist way, she doesn’t believe in inequality between genders.

THE UNBORN

The unborn was released in 2009, and is branded as a super natural horror thriller. The main image on the cover of this poster is a young girl; she is attractive and is dressed minimally to attract a male audience. At first the girl on the poster does not look in a danger but when you look closer you see the reflection of a male in the mirror, this shows her looking vulnerable and threatened.

The colours in this image are all dull, dark colours these colours such as black and grey are usually associated with horror films because these colours portray a scary, tense and unpredictable atmosphere.

The fonts used on this poster are gothic looking; this is used to present an old fashioned tone to the film making you think that it may introduce something from the past into modern film.

The tag line from this film is ‘Evil Will Do Anything To Live’ this shows that the film isn’t a gory film it is more psychological horror film, this is backed up by the image on the poster. It tells us that something evil is going to be waning to enter life and something bad will happen for then to go ahead.

Based on this poster this movie is targeted towards the male audience, this is obvious because the girl on the poster is overly sexualised and wearing very little clothing designed to attract male viewers.

The main image on the poster is the killer, the poster shows the iconic mask from the franchise which is easily recognisable even to people how are not fans. It is possible for the poster to be very minimal because like said previously it is iconic and people do not need a range of persuasive techniques to make them go hey will just go and watch the film because they know they already like the films meaning only the most important information is needed on it.

The colours on the poster are dark and dull, this is very common to horror film posters as it connotes something scary, dark colours are usually associated with the night time therefore not being able to see anything. Lots of films are set at night time to intensify the atmosphere of the movie and making the situations the characters are put in much more isolated. Black is used as the background as it shows a dark and gloomy ending the film. The splashes of red dotted around the poster mimic splashes of blood showing that there WILL be blood ad there WILL be death.

The sharp knife like chin on the mask conveys the idea of gory, ‘blood heavy’ film to come, it also connects the mask with danger.

The tag line for the movie is New decade. New Rules. This shows that it is still the same concept but something all new in terms of what is going to happen with the idea of some new and interesting twists and turns. People might not be bothered about seen yet another scream film and not know where they could go from the last tones but this is saying that it will be different and new and exciting.

I think that the target audience for this film is for 18+ and both male and female I think this film is directed more to the male audience though because of its large amounts of blood and gore suggested being in this film.

FRIGHT NIGHT

 

The main point in the poster is of the demon erupting from the house in the image it isn’t clear if this is the killer in the movie. The house in the image shows that it is very isolated as it is on its own and no other houses are shown. The house looks dark and gloomy. The single light in one of the rooms of the house shows a slight glimpse of hope.

The house is in the centre of the poster but does not dominate the poster because the dull colours of it fade into the rest of the poster; on the other hand the demon above the house is in a bright white and blue colour stands out making it the key feature of the the image.

All of the colours in the poste are very dark and threatening, it is obviously night in the photo to match with the title Fright ‘Night’. The warm colours of orange and yellow coming from the window stand out because they are opposites and this possibly shows the survivor of the film.

The font of the title of the film has long knife like spikes on them and this is very threatening, I show                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             future danger. The font is written in white and this shows purity which contrasts with the dark dull colours on the main image making it stand out.

The tag line of the film is ‘there are some very good reasons to be afraid of the dark’ it is very common for horror films to be set in the dark because it adds an essence of uncertainty to the atmosphere creating a tense, dark vibe.

I think that the target audience for this film is women under the age of 18 I think this because there is no sexual image on the poster to attract men and the demon is sort of cartoon life attracting the slightly younger audience.

Mama still image analysis

This image is a close up shot of one of the little girls in the film mama. Victoria had been left alone in the forest with her little sister for years and they have grown up into feral children. As victoria becomes adjusted back to normal life with her uncle and his girlfriend the family are over watched by ‘Mama’ who had brought them up whilst living alone in the forest. This still shows the scene where mama tried to attack Annabelle then chases after Victoria and Lily, I like this still because I think that it shows that Victoria has The image is angled upwards untoward the little girl, to show her unrealistic power. Her dark eyes along with the dark whole in her mouth can connote dander in the future or that the future is ‘dark’. The shadows in the back ground show low key lighting to add an aerie atmosphere and to make the scene more scary.
